A 3D printer is a mechanical device, and some parts wear out. Knowing what each one does and when to replace it saves you a lot of trouble. Here are the main components.

Hotend and nozzle

The hotend is where the filament melts. The nozzle is its tip, where material comes out. The nozzle is a wear part: a standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle slowly widens, especially with abrasive materials (wood-, carbon- or metal-filled filament).

When to replace: when print quality drops for no obvious reason, or when you use abrasive filament — in which case you need a hardened steel nozzle.

Extruder

The extruder pushes filament into the hotend. If you hear clicking and the filament does not feed evenly, the extruder is often to blame — a worn drive gear or a blocked path.

Build plate and PEI

The plate is the surface prints stick to. A PEI plate is the most popular — prints adhere well to the hot plate and pop off easily once cooled. Over time the PEI coating wears and adhesion drops.

Silicone sock

A small silicone cover on the hotend. It keeps the temperature stable and protects the hotend from oozing filament. It is cheap but degrades over time — replace it periodically.

PTFE tube

The Teflon tube that guides filament from the extruder to the hotend (on Bowden systems). It heats up and slowly wears at the end — a worn tube causes jams.

Filament dryer

A separate accessory, but one of the most useful. It keeps filament dry and can feed the printer while it prints. More in the filament drying guide.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace the nozzle?

With regular PLA/PETG a brass nozzle lasts months. With abrasive materials (carbon, wood) — far less. A sudden drop in quality often points to a worn nozzle.

What is the difference between a brass and a hardened nozzle?

Brass conducts heat better and is cheap, but wears fast with abrasives. A hardened steel nozzle costs more but survives abrasive filament.

Why do my prints no longer stick to the plate?

Often grease. Clean the PEI plate with isopropyl alcohol. If the coating is worn, the plate needs replacing.
